The "Moko" in Mokoseek is derived from Moko Jumbie. In the Caribbean, Moko Jumbies are traditional folk characters that were originally brought from West Africa; they are costumed dancers on stilts that are often seen during carnival. The word "Moko" is based on the name of a West African God and "jumbie" or "ghost" .
Trinbagonian novelist, Earl Lovelace, describes them as "seeing beyond the present space and time, providing a sense of history and a vision of the future".
